Kang Pyo Lee, Visiting Assistant Professor of Business Analytics in Tippie College of Business, used Distance and Online Education media studios to help build instructor presence in his fully online course.

Instructor presence connects to student success

Recorded lectures provide many benefits for online students - they can pause, rewind, and re-watch videos to learn at their own pace and on their own schedule. But it’s easy to overlook another benefit of high-quality recorded lectures – that students get to see more of their online instructor. This both increases engagement with course content and builds rapport.

Build engagement with media

Kyang Pyo Lee

Kang Pyo Lee’s online course combines synchronous communication and collaboration (Zoom meetings) with asynchronous methods like recorded lectures to provide students an engaging learning experience. Lee worked closely with Distance and Online Education (DOE) staff to produce thoughtfully-scripted and professionally produced online lecture videos. The effort put into designing learning content for the online environment and building in instructor presence throughout his course are best practices that make a difference for students.

"I managed to create as many as 64 videos after all, which would've been impossible without the support from the DOE (Distance and Online Education) here at the University of Iowa. My new online course based on these videos will be launching soon next semester. I can't wait to see how students like this new wave of online learning.” – Kang Pyo Lee
