Students with an extended time accommodation are eligible for more time on exams.
What students should do
Student accommodation information will display automatically in the Proctored Exams Portal once the student does the following:
- Open MyUI.
- Click to open the Student Information/Courses and Grades tab.
- Open Course Accommodations.
- Select accommodations to be used for a given section.
- Click "Generate LOA" to save the selection.
Encourage students to complete this process early in the semester. If the student is struggling to add accommodations in MyUI, contact sds-exams@uiowa.edu
Beginning March 26, 2025, instructors no longer need to manually adjust the time allowed for students who elect to use SDS extended time accommodations if ICON Classic Quizzes is used in the course.
A daily process will run at 2:00 AM CST to adjust time allowed on ICON (Classic) Quizzes for students who have enabled extended time accommodations for your course.
If your student(s) enables an extended time accommodation for your course without sufficient time for the daily process to adjust time allowed on an upcoming timed quiz, you will need to manually adjust the time for that specific quiz. (Any remaining timed quizzes in the course will be adjusted when the process runs.)
Use the Moderate Quiz tool on your ICON quiz page to view accommodations or make manual adjustments to timed quizzes in your course.
Manual adjustments to timed quizzes
- Login to your ICON site, click on Quizzes, and select the desired exam.
- Click on “Moderate This Quiz” (see gear icon on the top right side of the screen).*
- Locate the student’s name in the list that appears (by scrolling or searching) and click on the pencil icon.
- A pop-up window appears that is called “Student Extensions.”
- Look for the row “Extra time on every attempt.” Beneath that row it says “everyone already gets XXX minutes.” In the empty box, type, in minutes, the number of additional minutes the student will get.
- To calculate the number of additional minutes for 50% more time, take the number of minutes everyone else gets and divide by half. Round up if it is a decimal and type that number in the box.
- To calculate the number of additional minutes for 100% more time, take the number of minutes everyone else gets and type that number in the box.
- If you have an Iowa City test center version and an Honorlock version of the online exam, be sure to repeat this process for both versions.
*Moderate This Quiz is only visible if the exam is published.
