Frequently Asked Questions

"Access code needed" message appears

If a student tells you that they need an "access code" to start the exam, let the student know that access codes are never needed to start an exam with Honorlock. Sharing or altering the access code disables Honorlock from the exam and may result in students taking the exam outside of Honorlock. Have the student visit the FAQ page for students and scroll to the bottom for ways to address the "access code" message.

Honorlock not working

If a student tells you that Honorlock is not working, there are various possibilities for what could be happening. Encourage the student to, first, contact Honorlock's live chat and, second, contact doe-exams@uiowa.edu. If a make-up exam is needed, scroll down to the Make-ups and Honorlock section below for more information.

No ID

If a student tells you that they don't have an ID to take an Honorlock exam, you will want to determine what type of ID they are lacking. Students can use more than a University of Iowa student ID to start the exam. Students can use any government-issued ID (e.g. driver's license, passport, etc.). In the rare event that the student has no ID of any kind on the day of the exam, please navigate to the exam in Honorlock and look for the Accommodations box. You can add permission for the student to test without an ID in that box.

Install Honorlock

To install Honorlock on your computer or laptop, complete the following steps:

  1.  If you do not already have it, download Google Chrome.
  2. Click on the Honorlock link in your ICON site or go to https://app.honorlock.com/install/extension.
  3. Agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click to add the extension.
  4. Click Add to Chrome and confirm your selection.

Update Honorlock

The Honorlock extension will typically update automatically. In some cases, the extension may not update. If you get an error message saying the extension if out-of-date or a message asking you to download the extension, reinstalling the extension will provide you with the latest version. Follow these steps to update Honorlock manually:

  1. Uninstall the extension.
  2. Install Honorlock again.

Uninstall Honorlock

Having the Honorlock extension installed should not impact your computer performance nor will the extension be monitoring you unless you are actively completing an exam with Honorlock. If you are still concerned, you can uninstall and reinstall the extension before and after each exam.

To uninstall Honorlock, follow the directions that Google provides for uninstalling any extension in Chrome:

To the right of your address bar, look for the extension's icon. Right-select the icon and select Remove from Chrome.

If you don't find the extension's icon:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More then Extensions then Manage extensions.
  3. On the extension you want to remove, select Remove.
  4. To confirm, select Remove.

Honorlock Password

The Honorlock extension automatically places an access code into each proctored online exam. This access code prevents students from accessing the exam without using Honorlock.

  • Do not edit the access code for any reason.
  • Do not share the access code in your with students.

Doing either of these will compromise the ability of Honorlock to proctor your exams.

Makeup exams & Honorlock

If your student will be taking a make-up exam with Honorlock on their personal desktop or laptop, neither you nor the student will need to take any action within the Proctored Exams Portal. To grant a make-up exam, you will NOT need to add a new proctored exam request for the student in the Proctored Exams Portal. Instead, you will need to assign the student to a different exam window in the Quizzes page in ICON. If needed, you will also need to add a second attempt for the student. If you would like assistance with a make-up using the virtual proctor, contact exam-services@uiowa.edu

Assign a different date/time to the student

  1. Open the “Quizzes” tab in ICON and click to open the exam.
  2. Click on “Edit” at the upper right.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  4. Under “Assign”, click on “+Add”. NOTE: Do not remove any information put in the Assign field previously - there is a risk of removing the exam from the gradebook.
  5. In the blue outlined box under “Assign to,” start typing the student’s name. Select the name when it appears in the drop-down menu below (load time can be slow.)
  6. Scroll down a little further to set an “Available from” and “Until” date for the student.
  7. Scroll to the bottom and press the gold “Save” button.

Allow another attempt at the exam

  1. Open the ICON site.
  2. Open the “Quizzes” tab.
  3. Open the exam. Virtually proctored exams have "Virtual Proctor" in the title.
  4. Click on “Moderate this Quiz.”
  5. Scroll down or search for the student’s name.
  6. Check that the student has an attempt remaining. The “Attempts Left” column should show “1.” If the student has attempted the exam, the “Attempt, Time, and Score” columns will be filled and “Attempts Left” will show “0.”
  7. To add an attempt, click on the pencil icon in the student’s row.
  8. In the box beside “Extra Attempts” type a “1.”
  9. Click on the gold “Save” button.

Exam grades disappeared

This happens when a student is granted permission for a makeup exam with the virtual proctor. In the Assign To field of the ICON exam, all virtually proctored exams have the exam assigned to "Everyone." If you delete "Everyone" and replace with a specific student's name, the exam now only assigned to one student. This causes all other grades to disappear from the gradebook.

When granting permission for a makeup exam with the virtual proctor, the "Everyone" field should be left alone and the "+ Assign To" button should be pressed. This will create a second Assign To field where the individual student can be added.
