Email doe-exams@uiowa.edu to make arrangements for proctored exams. Exam Services will need to know the following details about your exams:

  • the type of exam you will use (ICON-based or Paper-based)
  • the duration of each exam
  • the materials allowed for each exam
  • the dates for each exam.

Please wait to get confirmation from Exam Services before adding the dates you requested to your syllabus. The test centers can fill up fast and sometimes requested dates need to be modified.

Add the following information to your syllabus if you are using ICON-based exams:

  • Students must complete (insert number) online, proctored exams over the course of the semester. The exam schedule is as follows:
    • (insert exam number & date)
    • (insert material covered in the exam)
    • (insert the total number of points, exam format, or other details as needed)
  • All exams are completed online through the ICON Quizzes tool and must be proctored. Students can take exams in one of the Distance and Online Education (DOE) Test Centers, located in Iowa City, Iowa. Students should access the Exam Info page on their ICON course homepage for the link to schedule exams at Iowa City. Students will login with their hawkID and password. Students should self-schedule an exam appointment. Exam Information page can be found in ICON by clicking on Modules and scrolling down to the Exams module.
  • Students can also complete exams with the on-demand remote proctoring service, Proctorio. There are no fees associated with the use of Proctorio. Students may take exams any time within the approved exam window. Proctorio will provide a few minutes prior to the start of each exam for identification and test set-up purposes. This will not count as part of your testing time. To successfully use Proctorio, students must access ICON via the web browser Google Chrome and have installed the Proctorio extension. Students must have a computer with a webcam, microphone/headset, and a strong internet connection.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to register for their exam one week before the intended examination date in order to avoid scheduling conflicts. Information regarding exam scheduling and policies are posted on the course homepage (ICON). Contact Exam Services (doe-exams@uiowa.edu) or 319-384-4800) with any questions. Students may also visit (https://distance.uiowa.edu/courses/exams) for more details.  Each student is responsible for reading all the exam information and ensuring that the identification, location and technical requirements are met for the exams.

Add the following information to your syllabus if you are using Paper-based exams:

  • Students must complete (insert number) online, proctored exams over the course of the semester. The exam schedule is as follows:

    • (insert material covered in the exam)

Exam Services reserves the right to approve or reject off campus proctors. Students should submit a request for off-campus proctoring at a minimum of two weeks prior to the intended examination period. To submit the request, access the link in the Exam Info page in the ICON course homepage. Students will login with their HawkID  and password. A page called “Exam Info - (Semester/Year)” will be added to your ICON course by Exam Services. That page includes the dates of your exams and instructions for your students on how to schedule exams.

We use scheduling software that allows students to login with their HawkID and password. Once inside the scheduler, students can select a date and time only within the window which was confirmed by Exam Services.

  • Students whose courses have ICON-based exams can schedule at one of our Iowa City Test Center or can download and install Proctorio via the links found on the “Exam Info” page.
  • Students in courses with Paper-based exams can schedule at Iowa City or request paper exams be sent to other approved test centers. Those links can also be found on the “Exam Info” page.

For more details, see our general information for students at (https://distance.uiowa.edu/courses/exams).

At this time Instructors cannot access the scheduler. Please contact Exam Services if you have a question about whether or not a student is scheduled at an Iowa City Test Center or an off campus test center.
